List Of The Top 10 Smallest Countries in The World 1. The world's smallest country is the Vatican, also known as the Holy See. This country fits within the Italian capital city of Rome, and is the center of the Catholic Church. Check out our list of the Top 10 Smallest Countries in the world It is also home to the biggest church in the world – St. Peter's Basilica, and holds some of the most significant art works of the Renaissance such as The Pieta and the Creation of Adam. Its income comes from the voluntary contributions of over 1 billion members of the Roman Catholic Church around the world. The remainder of its economy comes from the sales of postage stamps, tourist mementos, and admission fees of museums. 2. Monaco is home to the largest number of millionaires and billionaires in the world. Known for its gambling and luxury goods and services industry, Monaco is a favourite playground of the rich and famous. Bordered by France on 3 sides and one side by the Mediterranean Sea, the residents of Monaco are mostly French-speaking. With a population of over 36,000, Monaco is the world's most densely populated country. The most popular annual event is the Formula 1 race, with tracks passing through the city streets. 3. Nauru is the smallest island country in the world. It was known in the 1980's for a booming phosphate mining but is now a quiet island off the radar of tourists. Nauru is also known as the country with the most obese people in the world, with 97% of its men and 93% of women being obese or overweight. Because of this, Nauru is also home to the world's highest level of type 2 diabetes, with 40% of its population suffering from the ailment. 4. Tuvalu is probably the least known of the places on this list, its formerly known as the Ellice Islands, and located in the Pacific Ocean. There are about 10,000 inhabitants, with 8km of roads, and only 1 hospital present on the main island. The country was once a British territory but became independent in 1978. It is notoriously difficult to get to and its tourism is very low which also makes it different from the others on this list. 5) San Marino is completely surrounded by Italy and is nicknamed the Most Serene Republic of San Marino. Claiming to be the oldest surviving sovereign state in the world and the 3rd smallest country in Europe, it has a population of only 30,000. Lichtenstein is a German-speaking country, this is the only nation in the world to be completely located in the Alps. Located between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein is the richest country in the world by GDP per capita, with the lowest unemployment rate of 1.5%. It doesn't actually have an airport and visitors must go through switzerland before more travel to get there. 6. St Kitts and Nevis are known as The Mother Colony of the West Indies, and the 2 islands in the Caribbean were some of the first islands to be occupied by Europeans. Its economy is dependent on tourism and some small manufacturing industries. The islands also provide fantastic diving sites due to abundant marine life. A major sugar exporter for centuries, the large plantations are now beautiful estates that have been converted into hotels and resorts. 7. The Maldives is the smallest country in Asia in terms of area and population. There are over 1000 coral islands in the Maldives, making it one of the world's most dispersed countries. It didn't become an independent country until 1965 after many colonial rules. Today, the Maldives has a vibrant tourism economy due to its famous white sand beaches and crystal blue waters. 8. Malta is another island country located in the Med. 3 major islands make up the Republic of Malta: Gozo, Comino, and the largest, Malta. This small country has a population of over 450,000 inhabitants, making it one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Another popular tourist destination, people come to Malta for its sunny weather, attractive beaches, over 7,000 years of intriguing history, and a vibrant nightlife. 18. Grenada is known as “The Island of Spice." The world's largest producer of nutmeg and mace, this nation located near Trinidad and Tobago has a very strong influence of French tradition and culture in the country. A popular tourist destination, you'll find French-influenced architecture and art all around the island, with cricket as the most popular sport. 5 – San Marino - 61 km² San Marino is a tiny country 61 square kilometers in size that is completely surrounded by Italy. It has a population of 32,000 people, one of the lowest unemployment rates in Europe, no national debt and more cars than people. It’s located two and half hours drive south of Venice near the coast of the Adriatic Sea. San Marino claims to be the oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world. San Marino is also one of the wealthiest countries in the world in terms of GDP per capita. 4 – Tuvalu - 26 km² Tuvalu formerly know as Ellice Islands is located between Hawaii and Australia. It’s total land mass is 26 kilometers squared, when viewed from above is essentially the ring of a large underwater land mass that hasn’t quite breached the surface yet. Tuvalu has a population of 10,650 people which come from Polynesian descent. Most of the people live in Funafuti and the surrounding connected land to it. The traditional foods eaten in Tuvalu are pulaka, bananas, breadfruit, taro, coconut and seafood. Locals often catch flying fish on a boat with a spotlight and a butterfly net. 3 – Nauru - 21 km² Nauru is a tiny island off the coast of Australia being only 21 square kilometers in size. It is the smallest island nation in the world but not the smallest country. It was once one of the richest countries in the world back with the boom of Phosphate mining in the 1970’s. Most of the phosphate is gone now and since the country has struggled until Australia started up a detention camp on the island. The camp itself has created over 100 jobs as well as helping all the local businesses. Before the camps were setup the unemployment rate was around 90%. This was due to the country being so rich from mining that wealth was distributed and the people of Nauru no longer felt the need to work. This had an extra effect of people no longer, fishing or gardening and became very sedentary. Soon followed as the importation of western food which has lead to 97% of the population being overweight or obese. Now over 40% of the population suffers from type 2 diabetes. 2 – Monaco - 2 km² Monaco is an incredibly tiny country only 2 square kilometers in size located on the south western tip of France. It is bordered on 3 sides by france and 1 side by the Ligurian sea. Monaco is known for 2 things really, first gambling. There are 5 casinos in Monaco, 3 of which have been featured in 3 different James Bond movies. Secondly Monaco is known for the annual Monaco Grand Prix race which runs through the narrow streets with tight turns at high speeds. Most of Monaco’s 36,000 residents are millionaires and billionaires with only 1/5th the population actually born there. Monaco is a constitutional monarchy dating back to the 1300s. It is run by the Grimaldi family, the oldest ruling house in Europe. 1 – Vatican - 0.44 km² The Vatican is the smallest country in the world at only 0.44 square kilometers. Located in the city of Rome, the Vatican is known for having the largest church in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica. The Vatican also has the smallest population of any country in the world at 842 people. That includes over 100 swiss guards, cardinals, clergy and one nun. The bulk of the population live abroad in diplomatic positions around the world. The swiss guard, you know those guys in fully looking jester outfits, were hired in 1506 to protect the pope and has been this way ever since. Benito Mussolini signed the papers in 1929 allowing the Vatican to be it’s own country. Along with it’s freedom they were given 92 million dollars (around 1 billion dollars today). The Vatican GPD ranks 18th richest in the world which primarily comes from donations from Catholic churches, souvenirs, stamps, collectables and museum tour fees.
